Double bass10/4/2023 Acting as a student volunteer and a representative from De Montfort University enhanced my confidence, communication skills and ability to adapt to a particular individuals needs as and when required. Overall, the project was an absolute delight and I am honoured to have been a part of it. Seeing particular participants grow in confidence and skill was absolutely incredible – it was clear that the project had a huge, positive impact on them. For me personally, these were my favourite moments throughout the project. Whether a musician from the Philharmonia, a participant with dementia or a student volunteer everyone listened in complete awe and admiration. The most beautiful and magical moments were those where one or two people performed for the rest of the group. Whether playing an instrument, singing, dancing, reading a poem or having the opportunity to lead part of a discussion, we all had an opportunity to be in the limelight. Despite the fact there were so many of us in each session, we all had our moment to shine. We sang, laughed and danced together creating moments of chaos but the kind of organised, beautiful chaos. For a project like this one, I expected quite a lot of the above moments. With any online meeting, it can be difficult to manage a large number of people it can be quite easy for everyone to talk over each other and can be quite chaotic. They were fun, vibrant, helpful, encouraging and kept everyone engaged at all times. With the current climate making us unable to run sessions in person, I was a little concerned that it would be difficult to keep the rest of the participants actively engaged but the end result was quite the opposite! The project leads were absolutely brilliant. My particular role throughout the duration of the project was a student volunteer, and I loved every minute of it. The only part of the brain that the disease does not affect is musical memory, so it is no wonder that it brought so much joy and cheer to everyone involved. Whilst on the project, I learned so much more about dementia that I wasn’t aware of before. Music, especially dancing, makes my nan the happiest she has ever been, and so I wanted to help spread joy to others too. Initially, I was drawn to the project as a result of my love for music also, because my Nan has dementia. In this blog, De Montfort University student Molly shares her experience taking part as a student volunteer. In Bedford, we produce Hear and Now with Orchestras Live and co-design it with Tibbs Dementia Foundation’s Music 4 Memory and Fusion Youth Singing. In Leicester, Hear and Now is supported by De Montfort University, and delivered in partnership with Leicester Musical Memory Box and local primary schools. The project has been running online since May 2020, quickly adapting to the new challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic through Zoom sessions for participants across our residencies of Bedford and Leicester. Through the leadership of Tim Steiner and Philharmonia musicians, each project creates new music based on the shared exploration of participants’ stories. The flagship intergenerational initiative is grown out of creative collaboration between adults with dementia and their carers, and young musicians from the local community. Uniting young and old through music and storytelling, Hear and Now is one of our most moving projects. Principle of inclusion meaning10/4/2023 How can you ensure that all of your learners are set up to succeed in your online course? How can you communicate your goals and expectations in meaningful ways? Principle 2: Set explicit student expectations. This can be done anonymously using a Google form or live in Zoom using the poll feature (for closed-ended questions). Ask for feedback from students about the online climate.Create guidelines for online discussions (see Principle 2 below), revisit discussion guidelines that were previously agreed upon, ask students to pause and reflect, and to use “I” statements when discussing difficult issues that arise in conversations about course content. Address challenging classroom moments directly, whether during live Zoom sessions or in the CourseWorks discussion space. This includes holding virtual office hours being responsive to student emails, chats, or messages and periodically checking-in with learners. Put supports in place to ensure that students meet your expectations. In online discussions, whether synchronous or asynchronous, use names and pronouns used by students.Encourage dialogue about online learning experiences and share learning strategies that are working for students. Provide opportunities for students to interact with each other online–discussing in small groups using the CourseWorks Discussion spaces or in Zoom Breakout Rooms–to help students feel more connected to each other and build a sense of community.Describe your own fears and struggles in teaching and learning online to break down barriers and demystify the online learning process. Remote learning is challenging for both students and instructors. Lance Gravlee (University of Florida, Department of Anthropology) : “What would you like me to know or be thinking about as we try to create the best possible learning environment and keep everyone healthy during the rest of the semester?” One possible question comes from a survey shared by Dr. Their responses can inform your approach going forward, and it allows instructors to be mindful of students’ personal situations and barriers to their learning (e.g., students may not have reliable internet access or a quiet space to learn and complete coursework). Ask students for their thoughts on online instruction, communication, interaction, collaboration, etc. Survey your students about their concerns, needs, and preferences for online learning.Transitioning a course online mid-semester provides an opportunity to check-in with your students and partner with them on creating an online learning environment that is supportive. It is important to think about your learners, their prior experiences with online learning, and their needs. How can you create a positive online course climate for students in your live Zoom class sessions and your CourseWorks course site? How will you know the climate is supporting learning online? Principle 1: Establish and support a class climate that fosters belonging for all students. Principle 5: Reflect on one’s beliefs about teaching (online) to maximize self-awareness and commitment to inclusion.Principle 4: Design all course elements for accessibility.Principle 3: Select course content that recognizes diversity and acknowledges barriers to inclusion.Principle 2: Set explicit student expectations.Principle 1: Establish and support a class climate that fosters belonging for all students. Wiper fluid frozen10/4/2023 So, you actually need to look for a windshield washer fluid that is appropriate for the season. And what happens to water at 32℉? That’s right it freezes. The one thing that all of these different types of washer fluid have is that their base ingredient is water. There are washer fluids in concentrate, in tablet form, designed to remove bugs, with Rain-x and the list goes on. Just like everything else in life, there are so many choices when it comes to your windshield washer fluid. Does the type of washer fluid make a difference? Why does my windshield washer fluid freeze? You forgot to make sure that you had a winter blend of windshield washer fluid in the reservoir tank. You hear the pump running but there is no washer fluid coming out of the nozzles. The answer is ‘yes’, your windshield washer fluid can certainly freeze during the bitter cold of winter. Will your windshield washing fluid freeze if it gets too cold? Well, windshield washer fluid is a liquid like any other in your car (your welcome for stating the obvious). One day you go to clean all of the salt, sand, and grime that has accumulated on your windshield and….NOTHING One thing that may fall off your radar is your windshield washer fluid. You make all of your preparations for your car, switching the summer tires for the winter tires, checking the antifreeze level, etc. After enjoying summer and having autumn full of activities its time to bundle up and get ready for another winter. Echofon akustik10/4/2023 This will increase the sensation of control and create a less stress-induced environment. If a workplace is near reflecting walls, the recommendation is to use wall absorbers as a complement to the free-hanging units.įree-hanging units increase the ability to localise sound sources in the vicinity of a workplace. Division into smaller patches will enhance the diffraction effect and contribute to a more diffuse sound field. When using free-hanging units as a complement to wall-to-wall acoustical ceiling, it is often better to split the free-hanging units into smaller patches and distribute these over the total ceiling area than to use larger free-hanging units irregularly over the ceiling. With Ecophon’s functional and versatile approach to acoustics. Their high-performance sound absorbing panels and acoustic ceiling tiles create a well-balanced environment, enhancing people’s wellbeing and performance both in professional and leisure settings. In cases where the free-hanging units are used as solitary rafts above workplaces, the absorbers should be installed as close to the workplace as possible, thus increasing the shielding effect. The free-hanging units should cover the working area, preferably with a slight overlap. At Muffle, we supply everything from Ecophon ceiling tiles to Ecophon Solo baffles. Reduced stress and stress-related symptoms. The subjective effects of free-hanging units are: Installing free-hanging units above workplaces will, in addition to the effects listed above, reduce sound propagation across large distances and contribute to increased privacy between working groups. In open-plan spaces, free-hanging units can be used as a complement to wall-to-wall acoustical ceilings. Increased speech intelligibility and C50.Noise reduction in the vicinity of Free-hanging units.Around an free-hanging unit, the acoustical effect is manifested as: By supplementing with suspended horizontal absorbers or baffles, the acoustic environment can be improved with a reduction of the sound level and a diminishing of sound as distance increases. The absorbent islandscan be designed as baffles or horizontally suspended units.Ībsorbing islands rafts can also be used in environments where absorbing ceilings do not provide sufficient absorption. where temperature is regulated via the joists (concrete core activation) or where there are large areas of glass, absorbent islands rafts is one way of creating acceptable acoustic environments. In premises where, for various reasons, an overall ceiling cannot be used, e.g. Such areas can be, for instance, reception and information counters or refreshment areas, included in larger, noisy spaces. In large, noisy environments such as open-plan areas, restaurants, shopping centres etc., free-hanging units can be installed close to working areas or other locations where acoustical treatment is needed in order to achieve suitable conditions for communication, concentration or recovery. Both effects can be used to increase sound absorbing properties. Where free-hanging units are used to improve poor acoustics, solitary units give the benefit of diffraction effects, with a larger area of the absorbing patches being exposed to the sound field. The use of free-hanging units provides flexibility and a multitude of acoustical solutions to problems related to acoustical design. Dalai lama meditate10/4/2023 And it suggests that it's really part of our nature.” “Focusing on others as the Dalai Lama often teaches and as research shows, is actually something that is better for our happiness than focusing on ourselves… Simple practices for lovingkindness and compassion can produce measurable changes very, very quickly. So you see, it is quite wise selfishness.” That brings me inner peace, also inner strength and including sleep well. The Dalai Lama told me that acting in a “more compassionate way to others is the best way to fulfill your own interest. Surprisingly, this altruism can in fact be in your self-interest. A more altruistic mind brings more happiness.” And on this planet, there are lots of problems, mainly selfishness. “Warmheartedness is the key factor for a happy life. The second element that the Dalai Lama came back to again and again in our interviews is warmheartedness. And that is a really important key to our happiness.” “We are less likely to be pulled like a kind of rudderless sailboat on a turbulent ocean through these simple kinds of meditation practices. “If we can see these thoughts and feelings for what they are, which is temporary, they're not who we are, then we can be less hijacked by them,” said Dr. But when you can see your thoughts and emotions clearly, they don't own you as much. We're bombarded by thoughts and emotions all the time. What’s more, when you wake up from distraction, you see that our minds are out of control. And this is like a bicep curl for your brain. Every time you get distracted, which will happen a million times, you just start again and again and again. This is an important point, because many people think that when they get distracted in meditation, that they have failed. You know, at least 50 good scientific studies that show that meta-awareness really can be strengthened through simple mindfulness practices.” If we're not aware of what it is that's happening in our mind, how can we change it? So this kind of awareness is really crucial, and there's quite a lot of research now. Meta-awareness is being aware of what it is that we're doing. Davidson, “is what scientists call meta-awareness. “One of the key attributes that we cultivate during simple mindfulness practices,” said Dr. Davidson, is one of the crucial points of meditation: that we have the ability to notice our thoughts and not be carried away by them so much. We have the ability to keep peace of mind. We have the ability to judge, to analyze. “This human brain,” said His Holiness in one of our interviews, “is not like the animal brain. The first step is recognizing that our minds have the power to reflect on themselves, and to grow. Richard Davidson, the foremost neuroscientist in the world studying the impact of meditation on the brain, and Roshi Joan Halifax, the renowned American Zen Buddhist teacher. It's actually a skill.Īnd, in our new ten-session course, The Dalai Lama’s Guide to Happiness, we’re going to train you in it, together with Dr. The headline of this extraordinary conversation between ancient Buddhist wisdom and modern science is that the brain and the mind are trainable that happiness is not an unalterable factory setting. For decades, His Holiness, as the Dalai Lama is called, has been working with Western neuroscientists, combining ancient wisdom practices with modern science to study what really works to make us happy. Last fall, I traveled seven thousand miles to Dharamsala, in northern India's Kangra Valley, to a place that has been home since 1959 to one of the most recognizable human beings on the planet: the Dalai Lama. 1973 winnebago brave10/4/2023 Steer clear of white with neutral schemes. Gameplay and the extensive combat Credit: Jason CappĮlderand is an expansive Metroidvania title that borrows heavily from the Castlevania side of things. There are notes to be found throughout that expand upon things, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading them, as they give so much more context to what is happening in the world around you. The story is fed at the beginning, slowly throughout, and builds nicely to a strong crescendo at the end. Honestly, Elderand is perfectly paced for a title in the genre. It is a dark and painful path, but it does have its rewards. You pursue glory and treasures as you vanquish the enemy threat and move along the journey. There is a Lovecraftian element to Elderand, as we see our hero take on a slew of monsters to save the people and the land from such horror. The story is a rather simple one, but it is captivating nonetheless. The customization options are limited, but it is nice to have a playable character more akin to your liking than just a generic one. In Elderand, you play as an avatar of your choice.
